Hello! My name is Sudhir V. Tawalare, and I am a licensed Physical Therapist in New York and New Jersey. I am a board-certified specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy as confirmed by the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) specialty board. According to the APTA, there are 66,000 registered therapists in the USA, but only 6,000 of them are certified specialists in their respective areas. I have been a therapist for over 25 years with experience in treating consumers in three different countries, with the last 21 years of experience being in the U.S.
I was born in India, and that is where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in physical therapy and my post-graduate diploma in rehabilitation. After receiving my post-graduate diploma, I worked at the All-India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Mumbai (Bombay), India as a clinical instructor for post-graduate students of Physical/Occupational Therapy. At this institute, I began my journey as a physical therapist as well as my personal quest to learn as much as I could in my field of interest: Orthopaedic and Hand Therapy.
In 1989, after four years of experience at this institute, I had the opportunity to work in the United Kingdom. Upon moving to the U.K., I met my wife, Cathryn Derham, who was born in Dublin, while working in the physical therapy department of a community hospital.
In 1990, I came to the United States! My first position was at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Soon I earned a position as a Senior Therapist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. I became Acting Chief of Physical Therapy at the same hospital.
In 1996, my wife and I moved to New Jersey, and I worked as a clinical specialist for Sports Medicine and Rehab of North Jersey in Riverdale, NJ. I worked at this facility for 6 years before earning my specialty board certification in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. I then took a position as a Center Coordinator for the HealthSouth Corporation facility in South Orange, NJ where I worked on my specialty certification in Hand Therapy.
Throughout all of these years of working, I was dreaming of owning my own private practice where I could do what I knew would be best for my patients. That was how Northeast Rehabilitation, Inc. was established! Cathryn, OTR/L and I are the owners. She is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist with a specialization in Sensory Integration. She practices in New Jersey. We live with our 18-year-old son, Samir, in Park Ridge, NJ. I love motor bike riding, playing badminton, and traveling.
Though I have my own business, I am still faithful to the personal quest I began many years ago. I have been tirelessly attending continuing education classes in my areas of specialty so I can utilize the most current treatment techniques and equipment in serving my clients.
